  • Obsessive Compulsions

    Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that affects two to three percent of the population (more than 500,000 Australians).

    OCD is characterised by obsessional thinking and compulsive behaviour.  Many people who have OCD traits may also experience symptoms of depression and or anxiety.

    Symptoms are often first noticed in late childhood or early adolescence and can have a significant impact on people’s lives as they get older.

  • Relationships

    As people change, our relationship with others often changes as well.  In a relationship it’s important to ensure we recognize if our relationship start to “Go a little off track”

    ​Relationship / Couple counselling is the process of working with the couple in an effort to identify problems areas and to learn new ways to manage differences and repeating patterns of distress.

    The relationship involved may be between a couple, friends, workmates or employers in a workplace.

    Good Communication is the key factor in a relationship and it is often poor communication that is cause of relationship conflict.

    At RCS we can assist in learning new ways to effectively communicate in the relationship and help you get “Back on track”.

    Clinical Supervision

    Paul is an experience clinical supervisor as well as an educator of supervision theory and practice.

    No matter what discipline you are from you should consider a safe supervision environment just as important as your clinical work.

    Staff Education

    Paul has been an educator for many years teaching mental health literacy to the general public and to local government and non-government organisations.

    Paul can provide a wide range of tailor-made educational information sessions for your staff on mental health issues.  For example: “Looking after yourself” provision of self-care, Managing Depression and Anxiety, STRESS – Signs & Symptoms in the workplace, Problem Solving in the workplace and more

    The Rockhampton Counselling Service is a counselling service committed to providing a wide range of services to individuals, couples or groups.  Professional and Clinical Supervision is available to professionals requiring access to an experienced clinical supervisor and supervision educator.

    Employment Assistance Support is available to businesses and organisations as well as tailor made staff educational sessions / workshops / training on a wide variety of topics including mental health education, team building and critical incident debriefing.

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

    CBT is a form of evidenced based psychotherapy that has been demonstrated to be effective in helping people to overcome a wide variety of problems, including those involving depression and anxiety. It is based upon scientifically-informed principles of human psychology and its effectiveness for a wide variety of problems has been supported by hundreds of scientific studies of the years.

     

    CBT focuses on the patterns of thought and behaviour that maintain both adaptive and maladaptive behaviour.  It assumes that these patterns are learned, and that new patterns can be learned when old ones are no longer useful

  • Depression

    Depression is more than just a low mood or feeling sad – it’s a serious medical illness.

    While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time and often seemingly without reason.

    People with depression can find it hard to function every day and may be reluctant to participate in activities they once enjoyed.

     

    Depression is one of the most common of all mental health problems.  One in seven people in Australia will experience depression at some stage of their lives.

    Post-Traumatic Stress

    Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterised by the development of long last anxiety lasting anxiety response after a traumatic event such as a physical or sexual assault, exposure to a disaster, accidents, and war service or witnessing a traumatic event.

    Some symptoms of PTSD may include:

    • Depressed mood
    • Poor concentration
    • Withdrawal from social activity
    • Flashbacks or dreams of the event

    Trauma focused Cognitive behaviour Therapy (CBT) can assist you to move forward and regain control

  • Anxiety

    It’s natural at times for people to feel anxious, experience real fear or become frightened.
    In situations where we are actually in danger, fear is a healthy way of protecting ourselves.
    It alarms us to a threat and helps us to be able to react quickly.

    When we are anxious we worry about things in the future or things that might not even happen at all.

    Being fearful can also protect us: for example, from getting into a critical or dangerous situation in the first place.

    However being overly worried or frightened can also become a burden.

    It’s important to have a healthy level of anxiety and to not let your anxiety control you

  • Problem Solving

    Problem-solving is a mental process and a critical skill that involves discovering, analyzing and solving problems.

    The ultimate goal of problem-solving is to overcome obstacles and find a solution that best resolves the issue.

    Problem solving is a systematic approach that will assist you to resolve many of the problems that we all face in everyday life.

  • Stress Management

    Stress Management refers to a wide range of techniques and psychotherapies aimed at controlling a person’s levels of stress and are usually for the purpose of improving everyday functioning.

    Given the pace we live our lives and the demands placed on us, it is not very difficult to understand the level of stress many people are under

    Some of the important tasks involved in managing stress well focuses on sensible healthy living, a balanced diet and exercise

    Some early warning signs of stress include:

    • Prolonged sadness
    • Anxiety
    • Anger and irritability
    • Avoiding dealing with problems
    • Poor sleep patterns
    • Changes to personal hygiene /appearance

  • Post Traumatic Stress

    PTSD is a potentially debilitating anxiety disorder triggered by exposure to a traumatic experience such as an interpersonal event like physical or sexual assault, exposure to a disaster, accidents, combat or witnessing a traumatic event.

    There are three main clusters of symptoms: firstly, those related to re‐experiencing the event; secondly, those related to avoidance and arousal; and thirdly, the distress and impairment caused by the first two symptom clusters.
